Sometimes we are lucky enough in our lives to meet that one extra special person, they are like a little piece of positive sunshine, light up the room when they walk in and no matter what mood you are in, or what you have going on in your life, they instantly make you feel happy.

Meet Sophie...

If you already know Sophie, I am sure like me, you feel very lucky to have her in your life. This young lady is a true inspiration and the most beautiful person I have ever met, both inside and out!

What you might not know about Sophie, is that she has an incredible story, which she has now decided to share with the world, in the hopes to inspire other people.

"I don’t want to focus on the problem, I want to focus on how life has become so much more positive from a chapter in my life that occurred 5 years ago."

"I have never really shared my story before as I haven’t wanted sympathy and attention, however now that I am better, I want others to know that no matter what happens, you can always try and focus on making it better by being mindful and positive."

5 years ago, on the 25th of January 2014, I set off on my journey to Jaxonville, Florida not knowing where the next 2 months would take us really. But wow! What a 2 months it was! I met friends for life and inspirational people who helped me see positively and helped me see the end result. I will never forget them. My second family.

"Going through the journey of proton therapy with them made it worthwhile.

The decision of proton therapy was made in the previous months before I set off to America. The decision was a hard one due to situations at the time and not knowing what to expect, it was the completely unknown."

"I just want people to know that proton is the way to go, as I saw so many people healed from it. And now I am feeling strong, I am okay now. I have come out the other side and fingers crossed, I will carry on being positive.

I have entered my adulthood healthy, loving life and ready to make more memories."

"I wanted to share a bit of my story just to help anybody that is feeling down and to show that with a positive outlook, anything is possible. I honestly believe that if I was negative, my story would have been very different."

"I will never forget the support off my family and close friends who knew, especially my Nanna, Grandad and Aunty Karen."

"I can never thank the Ronald Mcdonald house enough as well as everyone I met in America for being the best people in the world. And for helping me see that life is worth living.

Thank you to all the inspirational people that made me feel like I was okay and I now definitely think along the lines that there is always someone worse off than yourself, so always be grateful for everything you have got."

"There is now a proton opening at Manchester and I 100% believe it is the way forward as I saw so many people get through a lot of illnesses through the proton. They have come through the other side with a life to live.

What is Proton Therapy?

In the field of medical procedures, proton therapy, or proton radiotherapy, is a type of particle therapy that uses a beam of protons to irradiate diseased tissue, most often in the treatment of cancer.

The first high-energy proton beam therapy centre run by the NHS is soon to open at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, allowing patients in the UK to access an important treatment for life-threatening cancers.
